by Van Wong

Kearny Mesa Little League (10-12) All-Stars jumped off to a great start over the weekend with two close wins against Rolando and North Park to move further in the winners bracket of the District 33 Little League (10-12) All-Star tournament. Kearny Mesa 8-10 All-Stars also won their opener against Chollas Lake, before losing to Allied Gardens. The All-Star tournament continues this week for both teams.

KMLL 8-10 All-Stars
On Friday evening at Serra Mesa, KMLL walked off 14-3 with a 10-run mercy rule over Chollas Lake 8-10 All-Stars. The team used great defense and timely hitting to get KMLL's first 8-10 All-Star victory in over a decade. With the win, KMLL had to face Allied Gardens, who defeated North Park 10-3 the previous day. Saturday at Little Damato in Murphy Canyon, KMLL was mercy ruled by Allied Gardens 19-0. They now enter the loser's bracket and will face Tierrasanta Tuesday, 6/27 5p at San Carlos in an elimination game.

KMLL 10-12 All-Stars
Saturday at Kuhlken Field in La Mesa, KMLL opened the D33 Little League All-Star tournament in a virtual rematch of the 2022 9-1l All-Star tournament elimination game against Rolando where KMLL lost 11-1. KMLL jumped out to an early lead sparked by a 2-run homer by Niko Lacson in the 3rd inning. They would extend the lead to 5-0 in the 5th with clutch hitting by Kaleb Majam and Lacson. More impressive is Lacson pitched a complete game striking out 8 batters while holding off a late game comeback by Rolando earning a 5-4 win.

Sunday at San Carlos, KMLL defeated North Park 3-2 in 7 innings in yet another rematch of last year's 9-11 tournament. KMLL jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first. Starter Kaleb Majam had some control issues early, but was bailed out by great defense, highlighted by two double plays in the first two innings with bases loaded. North Park tied the game 1-1 in the second with a moon shot over left field by Eugene Logan. In the bottom of 3rd, North Park took the lead 2-1 with a series of hits. Ethan Wong came in the 4th inning with 2 outs with runners at 1st and 2nd and went on to dominate North Park with 8 K's in his final 3 1/3 innings of relief, allowing only 1 hit and 2 walks. Dominic Hargrove tied the score in the 5th with a towering homer over the right field fence for his first career Little League homer. In the 7th, Brady McDonald drove in Lacson for the game-winning run with a hard grounder that the first baseman kicked.

KMLL will play Lake Murray Thursday, 6/29 5p at Lake Murray Little League Sunset Field.
